Idris Otun

Idris is a PhD candidate at the Parasitology Unit, Department of Pure and Applied Zoology, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. He is also engaged as a research assistant in the WHO-supported malaria vector surveillance project in Ogun State, Nigeria, through the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP). His research interest revolves around malaria vector control strategies through community engagement, sustainable and eco-friendly approaches. He is as well interested in implementation research to identify factors limiting control efforts against malaria and   Neglected Tropical Diseases. He became an alumnus of the West African Academy of Public Health through the award-winning Virtual Internship Programme in 2020. The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) appointed him in 2021 to serve as malaria and UHC youth army champion. 

He is an active  member of RSTMH and also has membership affiliations with other  relevant societies, including the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria (PPSN), and the International Association of Public Health Logisticians (IAPHL).  Idris has good history of supporting the SDGs. In addition to serving as a Global Youth Ambassador for ‘Theirworld’, a diplomatic fellow of FIGHR as a Sexual and Gender Based Violence Instructor,  he was also named a Climate Leadership Fellow in 2021. He was a RSTMH 2022 abstract presenter and travel scholarship awardee. In 2022, Idris was chosen as a 'global talent' to participate in the UNLEASH Innovation Lab hosted in India, to develop solutions to global issues towards achieving the UN-Sustainable Development Goals. To Idris, being a RSTMH student ambassador serves as an enabling avenue to advocate for good health and well being. He hopes to further his objective of advancing science and knowledge of global health through research and activism as a RSTMH student ambassador.
